Listen Alaskan,
Play Alaskan

We make great music up north.
So let’s hear it!

The Alaska Playlist Project makes it easy to listen to artists from the 49th state. All genres, all eras, all sounds, all styles.

We’re collecting Alaska music and music videos to lift up our local music. And you can help.

  • Many of our playlists are designed to keep growing indefinitely, which means there’s room for more artists and new work.

We also release new playlists regularly, and we have plans for more. Suggest a theme, or, better yet, make your own playlist featuring Alaskan artists!

  • Spotify was first music platform to make playlisting and sharing easy, so that was an easy phase one.

But we are populating our playlists on Deezer now, and have plans to expand to Apple Music and Bandcamp as they now allow playlisting (and as we have capacity). Our goal is to make it easy for listeners to find local music and to train the algorithm that our artists have things in common.

Community and volunteer energy will get us there sooner, so if you want to see all of that happen, submit some songs and contact us to volunteer!

  • If you’re a contributor to the Alaska music scene, we want to hear you. Submit up to 4-5 of your songs on Spotify or Deezer to the appropriate playlists, or music videos from Youtube, and we’ll add your work! See the FAQ’s for details.

(The process can take a couple weeks, so give it a minute.)

If your music’s not on Spotify, Deezer, or Youtube, and you don’t want it to be, we support you! Join our newsletter, and we’ll let you know when we’re able to branch out to platforms like Apple Music and Bandcamp.

  • We can only playlist each artist a couple times, so submitting dozens of tracks is not helpful. Instead, choose “lead singles,” two or three representative songs per record, showing off your range. We spread those songs out across different playlists.

  • Yes, yes, YES! Build your own playlist including Alaska bands, on any platform, and use the word “Alaska” — or the city name — in the playlist or description. This is how we train the algorithm that Alaskan artists belong in the spotlight.

If you’re proud of your playlist, share it with us (playlistproject@musicak.org). We follow other playlists and sometimes boost them on social media!

  • We dream of hearing more Alaska music everywhere, and getting our bands and songwriters recognized and paid. Tourists should be listening to local music on buses and in hotel lobbies, cafes should be proudly playing the local talent, and DJ’s should have an easy time discovering bands from around the state to feature on radio and podcasts.

The crew at MusicAlaska/AKIMI looks at music culture in places like Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and New Zealand, where boosting local music is a point of pride. Step one is making it easy for listeners to FIND local artists, and that’s a step we’re taking here.

Help us out by submitting a song! Then go listen and find your new favorite band!

  • MusicAlaska is a statewide non-profit organization working on promoting Alaska music and empowering Alaskan music workers — every age, every genre, everywhere.

We also support the concert calendar AKConcerts.com, put on the Alaska Music Summit, host workshops and teach-ins, and develop the festival and venue directories coming soon to MusicAK.org.
